Mr Gruenig was a master pharmacist and Glassblower, mentor, innovator in the Modern & Contemporary Studio Glass Movement. David’s work is collected worldwide and was in production from 1972 through the mid 1990’s. David (supported and edited by his partner) also published the newsletter “The Independent Glassblower”
The gallery features images of a selection of our exquisite glass goblets, vases, ornaments, lamps, objet d’arte, sculptures and bowls, all individual and unique. Many mouth blown objects that you will see here are ”one of one,” some are multiples: yet being hand blown and mouth blown glass, there is variety in expression and subtle differences between each and every piece. All of these works are unique and imperfect by design and technique.
Although he started in 1949 at age 10 while trying to melt glass shards with his father’s gas torch, between 1972 and the mid 1990’s DEG considered his glassblowing studio a laboratory, in which he built all manner of tools that he needed in order to explore the liquidity and luminance of glass more fully. The glass work is meticulously designed to embody the light and is remarkable in its color saturation brilliance and clarity, sense of frozen motion and simplicity. Earlier works date from 1972 to 1978. Later works date from the 1980’s into the 1990’s. All were made in Vermont (USA).
FROZEN MOTION
”Glass is a perfect art medium; it has infinite creative potential as a three dimensional fluid in motion, frozen into place at will. This, coupled with deliberate control of light through transmission, reflection and refraction as well as color and texture, allows these pieces to express unique design through a full spectrum, from graceful, functional entities to unique and beautiful art creations.”
Each piece is individually hand made by the artist, and each (usually) is signed and dated by year.
